Information about Basel

Basel lies on a bend in the Rhine in the Dreiländereck, a corner of Switzerland where Switzerland, France and Germany meet. Basel combines the past and the present, history and modernity, charm and Swiss efficiency. Founded in 44 BC, the city area of Basel has been settled by the Celts, the Romans and the Franks. The city has the oldest university in the Swiss Federation (1460), more than 30 museums, the first musical theater in the country, an internationally famous playhouse and numerous small theaters. There are one thousand concerts annually. Basel is known also for its music and jazz festivals featuring leading world artists. There are also a host of music clubs, 'small but fine' as they say here. Culinary delights also await you. There are more than a dozen eating places, all featured in the Michelin guide, within 30 minutes drive of the city.
