Art and Culture

Art enjoys the highest status in Basel. Basel without Art would be like Basel without the Rhine. No surprise then that on a stroll round the town you will come across works of art adorning the city. Works by internationally famous artists. Like Tinguely's "Brunnen" fountains, Borofsky's "Hammering Man" and Serra's "Intersection".
The many galleries in the city offer an incredible variety of art. You can get to many of the well-known museums in Basel on foot or by tram. The Kunstmuseum houses some of the best known paintings by European artists offering a broad pallet of works stretching from the Renaissance right through to modern art. Works by the Holbein family, Picasso, Braque and Gris are on show. The Jean Tinguely Museum, designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta, is dedicated to the artist Jean Tinguely. The Beyeler Foundation houses a unique collection of modern classics by Braque, Calder, Cezanne, Klee, Leger, Monet, Mondrian and van Gogh, not to mention other excellent works by contemporary artists.

Opera, ballet and theatre lovers will be spoilt for choice in Basel. The city has Switzerland's largest theater for opera, ballet and stage productions. Basel Theater and the newly-built playhouse (Schauspielhaus) stage a very broad repertory. Theatergoers of all persuasions will find something to their taste, from classic stage productions right through to avantgarde theater. Things are busy outside the official circuit, too. There are numerous small theatres and Volksbühne (People's Theater) not to mention the well-known Musical Theater where young and old alike are entertained.
