A little closer to the sun
Hublot is no stranger to the art of colour and materials, so this newest sunshine bright yellow sapphire watch shouldn’t take us by surprise, but its wrist shine does. To hear Hublot tell it, the brand has just come “A little closer to the sun” with the unveiling of this new Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire watch. The truth be told, they may have developed one of the most shimmering shade of sapphire to date.
Hublot is no newcomer to the sapphire case craze that has been taking a handful of brands by storm. In fact, it was more than three years ago that Hublot unveiled its first sapphire cased watches. The typically transparent materials is ultra-resistant to breakage and, as such, is quite difficult to machine. The making of a sapphire case takes hundreds of hours of milling, and finishing and polishing. Once Hublot had mastered the art, the brand wasn’t happy to rest on its laurels.
A year later, in 2017, Hublot unveiled its first sapphire cased watches in colour – introducing hues of smoked black, blue and red (more of a pink). Now, after even more time spent in research and development, Hublot unveils the boldly beautiful primary colour yellow in a sapphire case.
To create the sun-drenched color, Hublot combined the sapphire crystalline with copper and aluminum oxide, which also render the material one of the most scratch-resistant and hardest substances on the market. In fact, the watch measures 9 on the Mohs scale for hardness and scratch resistance – second only to a diamond that measures 10 on the Mohs scale. Additionally, the material is ultra lightweight and weighs just 107 grams on the wrist.
The 42-mm watch is equipped with the Hublot self-winding skeleton chronograph movement, HUB 4700, which is based on the legendary Zenith El Primero calibre and further customised by Hublot in its Nyon, Switzerland, workshops. The open-worked movement enables viewing of the gears, wheels and bridges. The chronograph subdials are also transparent except for the outer chapter ring of each in black with yellow numerals that allows for reading the information. The hands, markers, rings and Hublot logo are all bold yellow against the movement.
The Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire watch offers chronograph functions and calendar display at 4 o’clock on the dial. It is equipped with 50 hours of power reserve and features black-plated titanium crown and pushers. The sapphire crystal is antireflective. Just 100 pieces of the Spirit of Big Bang Yellow Sapphire watch will be produced and each is finished with a transparent yellow-lined strap. It is water resistant to 50 meters.
A closer inspection of this watch reveals the fine workmanship that went into creating the sapphire case and integrating the strap for a seamless look. Even the titanium screws that hold the case together are created in blackened titanium for a continuous run of black, yellow and transparency.
