“Engineering excellence”

Dr Jan Becker, CEO of Porsche Design, talks about an innovative world-time watch

What is the highlight of the model line-up in 2019?

Dr Jan Becker: This year’s Baselworld highlight is definitely the new 1919 Globetimer UTC. This world-time wristwatch really stands out thanks to a combination of radically simplified com plications and optimised legibility of the displays, preserving the home time and displaying it on a 24-hour scale. The local travel time is set by pushers – in 1h cycles, forward and backward. The date is linked to the local time and automatically switches forward and backward. Using a day/night disc as am/pm indicator, the correct local day phase is easily selected. It’s no longer necessary to adjust the travel time using the crown, or rely on a corrector for setting the date. Being dynamically waterproof, it can also be operated under water. Thanks to the lightweight titanium housing and the use of supple, original Porsche car interior-leather, it’s also exceptionally comfortable on the wrist.

What about the “motor”?

It is driven by the new Porsche Design Calibre Werk 04.110, based on the Sellita Calibre SW200, to which Porsche Design adds its own ball-borne bi-directionally winding rotor. The front of the calibre is equipped with a time-zone mechanism specially developed by our teams. A time-zone function such as this, equipped with an ingenious push-button apparatus, has not previously been available on the market. Porsche Design is the only com
pany of the industry that benefits from the R&D of a sports car manufacturer.

How important is the teamwork?

It is much more than teamwork. We have access to leading industry know-how and the methods of automotive engineering, which we are able to adapt to the watch industry. For instance, we follow a very structured process flow, which is derived from the automotive industry. Our suppliers are fully integrated from a very early stage, which makes this concept so unique. The principle of this development process is called “simultaneous engineering,” meaning that every department starts at the same time and all information is transparent at any given time for all parties involved. This is crucial for reaching the clearly defined time-to-market targets. When it comes to the production of our timepieces at our manufacture in Solothurn, we follow the same principles that Porsche uses for its sports cars in the process called lean production.

What else do visitors see at Porsche Design’s booth?

In addition to our booth, we have a special, adjacent exhibition space. Together with Porsche, we are presenting three very special models of the Porsche 911 together with the matching timepieces: a very early 911, the all-new 911 Carrera 4S, and the new GT3 RS, breaking down the barrier between sports cars and race cars. This new exhibition concept gives you an idea of the unique position of Porsche Design Timepieces in the world of watches. It shows our design competence and engineering excellence, the intelligent technology transfer from motor-
sports is a key factor as well.
