A selection of some refined chronographs that debuted at Baselworld 2019

Its ability to measure very short intervals makes the chronograph one of the most popular genres of mechanical watch. Scarcely any other kind of timepiece offers as many different models to choose from. Their appeal is further heightened by various additional chronographic refinements, such as, rattrapante or flyback. With innovative new materials, classic traditional metals and diverse design trends, this type of watch offers diversity in all its facets and caters to every taste. Here’s a selection of some refined chronographs that debuted at Baselworld 2019.

The Geneva-based manufacture has added Calibre CH 29-535 PS, a new a white gold model with a blue dial and Arabic hour numerals, to its line of hand-wound manufacture chronographs. The chronograph’s buttons have a special hat-like shape and are guilloche embellished on top. Bar-shaped hour- and minute-hands taper to points and are coated with luminous material. The hands contrast boldly against the dial, as do the applied white gold numerals.

An emphatically contemporary timekeeping dynamo with fine allusions to past, the Mille Miglia 2019 Race Edition premieres in a 44-mm stainless steel case that remains watertight to 100 meters. An automatic movement with chronometer certificate and two-day power reserve animates this racecar driver’s watch, which is also equipped with a tachymeter scale for calculating average speeds.

The saga of the Octo Finissimo reaches a new peak with a fifth world record. Bulgari has unveiled the slimmest mechanical chronograph ever built in the history of watchmaking. But that’s not all. The low-rise case contains Calibre BVL 318, which is a mere 3.3 mm tall, yet offers a GMT function and amasses a 55-hour power reserve. The 42-millimeter-diameter case surrounds a sand-blasted titanium dial and has a transparent back. With a height of just 6.9 millimeters, the case is likewise ultra-slim.

Art meets artistry in the Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski Ceramic. Created in collaboration with the artist Richard Orlinski, it has a 45-mm case of dark red ceramic containing self-winding Calibre HUB1155, which shows the date on a skeletonised ring that goes well with the transparency of the sapphire crystal dial and its applied calibrated ring. This newcomer is released in a limited edition of 200 watches.

The latest addition to the Carl F. Bucherer Heritage collection revisits a chronograph model introduced in 1956. The new Heritage BiCompax Annual has adopted the elegant shape of its predecessor, but in a modern 41-mm stainless steel case. It is available in two versions, each limited to 888 pieces. Modern and pure, the stainless-steel variant boasts a silver dial with black counters. The bicolour model features a rose-and-champagne dial with the bezel, push buttons, and crown crafted from rose gold. Both watches are powered by automatic calibre CFB 1972, which offers an annual calendar that displays a large date above the centre and the month between 4 and 5 o’clock.

The flagship of the new pilot’s watch collection features a military green dial. Two stepped counters stand out from the background thanks to their silver colour. They and a subdial for the seconds enable connoisseurs to deduce that the time is kept beneath them by Breitling Manufacture Calibre 01, which offers a 70-hour power reserve and has earned a COSC certificate. The 43-mm-diameter case remains watertight to 100 metres and is equipped with a bidirectionally rotatable bezel with a red arrowhead marker.

Zenith breaks new ground with a futuristic iteration of the chronograph wristwatch. The carbon case of the Defy El Primero 21 handsomely stages a version of the legendary El Primero movement that can measure elapsed intervals to the nearest 100th of a second, in a skeletonised model that also boasts an unprecedented deep black finish. Together with the dial’s elements, which are likewise black, the composition creates a resolutely contemporary design. The central 100th-of-a-second counter, as well as the elapsed seconds and elapsed minutes counters, have blackened hands with bright red tips that visually emphasise the unsurpassed high-performance chronograph function. Creating a captivating visual effect, alternating layers of randomly arranged carbon fibres make each case unique.

It convinces connoisseurs with Sinn’s typical technologies, e.g. AR-dehumidifying technique, temperature resistance and impossible-to-lose rotatable bezel. The case is watertight to 300 metres and protected against magnetism.
