Steve McQueen’s legendary chronograph in an exclusive collector’s edition

Presented simultaneously in Geneva and New York on 3 March 1969, the TAG Heuer Monaco was the first waterproof automatic chronograph in the history of Swiss watchmaking to feature a non-circular case. It broke with the aesthetic principles of traditional watchmaking: a large square case with straight angles, a metallic blue dial, a curved plastic crystal and, in particular, the crown is positioned on the left side of the case to emphasize the fact that this watch automatically winds itself. Also new at the time was absolute water resistance achieved by a wristwatch with a square case. But the greatest innovation was ensconced inside the case: renowned Calibre 11, which numbered among the first automatic chronograph movements ever built.

A journey through five decades

Patrick Dempsey and Chad McQueen presenting the special edition of the TAG Heuer MonacoIn honour of the 50th anniversary of the Monaco, five limited editions will be presented throughout the year. Inspired by the five decades of the Monaco from 1969 to 2019, these new models celebrate a style icon that is as topical today as it was half a century ago. Following the presentation of the first commemorative model at the Monaco Grand Prix in May, TAG Heuer unveiled the second variant in a limited edition of 169 timepieces in June at the location where the Monaco became world famous: the racetrack at Le Mans. Here, in 1970, Steve McQueen made the eponymous film in which he roars around the track in his Porsche 917 with a Monaco strapped to his wrist. Guests at the presentation included Steve McQueen’s son Chad and the actor, racing driver and brand ambassador Patrick Dempsey.

TAG Heuer Monaco Special Edition 80'sThe Monaco 1979 – 1989 Limited Edition boasts an expressive red dial with sunray finish and two rhodium-plated counters that match the square shape of the case. Black and white accents on the counters complement the hour-hand and minute-hand with their black tips. Powered by Calibre 11, this watch is 39 mm in diameter and water-resistant to a depth of 100 metres. Its stainless steel back bears the “Monaco Heuer” logo and is engraved with the phrases “1979-1989 Special Edition” and “One of 169”.

Box in authentic design

Inspired by the style of the 1980s, the new model comes in a dark blue box decorated with the Heuer logo and a horizontal stripe in the black-and-white chequered design of a racetrack’s start/finish flag. The timepiece rests atop a grey cushion and is surrounded by a red interior that exactly matches the colour of the dial.
