“A unique panorama”

More than 4,000 media representatives – reporters, bloggers, photographers – from all over the world attend Baselworld year by year. What does the show mean to them? Since when have they taken the long way to Switzerland and why? 4 of the 4,000, from Australia, Argentina and the United States, tell us their reasons.

Joe Thompson, Editor-at-Large, Hodinkee.com, USAJoe Thompson, Editor-at-Large, Hodinkee.com, USA:
“I’ve been attending Baselworld since 1979, and I still look forward to it every year. Professionally, as a watch reporter, it is indispensable. Baselworld offers a unique panorama on the global watch industry. There are more sources of information about watches and the watch industry at this event than at any other in the watch world. That’s one of the reasons Baselworld is such fun to cover. (The bratwurst sellers are another one.) The show is a treat personally, too, a cherished chance to see friends and colleagues from every continent except Antarctica!”

“Baselworld as the pinnacle show of the industry showcases high jewellery, watches, diamonds and gems. The four precious pillars of the luxury world, the ones I have always been interested in and have invested a lot of time and efforts to understand and promote since starting my blog ChampagneGem.com in 2011. I published my first blog post on Baselworld in May 2011 and it was always dream to attend the show. Finally that dream came true five years later. Since 2016 I have been a regular visitor year after year as Baselworld simply offers the latest and the greatest of not only watch innovations but also high jewellery creations. On top of all, Hall 3 has always been my haven for exceptional diamonds and gems, where I have the opportunity to see the best of the best stones that are out there to offer.“

Tracey Ellison, Founder and Editor, TheDiamondsGirl.net, USATracey Ellison, Founder and Editor, TheDiamondsGirl.net, USA:
“Since starting TheDiamondsGirl, attending Baselworld has always been the highlight of my year! I attend a minimum of eight trade shows a year and I can say without hesitation that Baselworld is without doubt the only show to combine the best of luxury watches, high jewellery, loose diamonds and gems in one location! Every brand reserves presenting their new collections until Basel, and the excitement in the air is palpable. This year promises to be the beginning of a new era for Baselworld, and personally, I am looking forward to a more intimate show that allows me to spend quality time with exhibitors, and really understand the novelties they are bringing to market. Nowhere else is there such a concentrated collection of retailers, exhibitors, collectors, and press, all sharing a common love of the very best that this industry can offer. It feels like family, and I for one cannot wait to return. I look forward to seeing the show go from strength to strength under its new leadership and direction, and feel honoured and privileged to be a part of it.”

Laura Garcia, Director and Editor, Aster Internacional, ArgentinaLaura García, Director and Editor, Aster Internacional, Argentina:
“Attending Baselworld is a must for us. Personally, this is my participation number 17 as journalist. But Baselworld is also closely related with our own history as a magazine – it was the first one in Latin America to publish news about the Swiss watchmaking industry. This relationship began in 1960, when our founder, Carlos Damián García, attended the “Schweizer Mustermesse Basel” or as we called it: “Feria de Muestras de Basilea” for the first time. Modestly, we’ve been witnesses and communicators of the past fifty years of this centennial Show and the Swiss watchmaking industry as a whole. And naturally, we look forward to being so in the future!”
