“Meeting each other in person”

Roland Schwertner, founder of the German watch manufacture Nomos Glashütte, talks about the importance of personal contacts and networking possibilities at Baselworld and gives a first outlook in terms of products.

Mr Schwertner, Baselworld has undergone major changes. What are your expectations of the new edition?

Roland Schwertner: The show remains important for us – because this is where everyone comes together. Retailers, journalists, bloggers, and customers are all here; in 2018 we had over 700 appointments in total. That said, we welcome the changes that Baselworld will undergo. We hope that they will help to bring retailers and watchmaking companies closer together; more networking would be great! After all, in the digital age it is more important than ever to meet each other in person once in a while.

As a genuine manufacture, Nomos Glashütte has impressed with some very innovative technical inventions in recent years. Which ones are you most proud of and what’s the next goal?

Roland Schwertner: The most significant innovation from Nomos Glashütte in recent years is certainly our in-house escapement, which we debuted at Baselworld in 2014. We are now producing this part in series, which is at work in the groundbreaking neomatik calibres DUW 3001 and 6101. And we are continuing to build on this success – so there is lots to look forward to from Nomos Glashütte at Baselworld this year. What we can say for now is that this new “neomatik” standard of movements forms the basis for future releases. The company is also concentrating on expanding its business in the USA and Asia – with offices in New York, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

Can you already share the product highlight debuting at Baselworld 2019?

Roland Schwertner: We don’t want to reveal too much at the moment, but one thing to mention would be that the success of our exceptional DUW 6101 calibre will be the basis for our new releases. We’d be happy to tell you more on the first day of the show! The most recent addition to our collection, Tangente neomatik 41 Update ruthenium, will also be a subject for discussion – along with our Campus series. “The Graduates’ Club” is growing with three brand-new automatic models, known as Campus neomatik. Even though we presented these two releases to the press at the beginning of the year, Baselworld will be the first opportunity to see them in person.

NOMOS Glashütte

NOMOS Glashütte is the award-winning German brand redefining what it takes to make fine mechanical timepieces. One of the latest developments from its watchmaking workshops: the three neomatik models joining the Campus series, two of which feature a bracelet for the very first time. Robust and youthful, their fresh and innovative design is unmistakable—as is the in-house automatic caliber at their heart. And there is even more to see this year.
